This year we set out to recognize our blossoming poets with global recognition on the internet. The volume of spectacular writing our children produce could fill more pages than we have time to create. Thus, we took April, National Poetry Month, to challenge our gifted authors to rise to the occasion by submitting a work they were proud of. The single top poem in each grade grouping would be immortalized here on pomcom.org!
We initially had decided to do one winner from each of three grade groups (k-2,3-5,6-8), however, based on what people submitted there have been two awards added; honorable mention as it was truly a difficult decision, illustrative since we were surprised at how many poems came in with visual art! If that was not enough for you, Mrs. Werstler asked to include a student representative reciting a Spanish poem, in Spanish.
This truly was a very exciting first competition. Next April simply cannot come quick enough!
The tale of two sisters' love,
Kept apart by a glove.
One sister's secret was ice and snow.
Which once gave the other sister a show.
Then the magic went out of control,
So they had to call a rock troll.
An accident happened leaving the sisters alone,
They had a fight on Coronation Day,
Which made the oldest run away.
The sister's palace made of ice and snow,
Looked over endless winter below.
Again the magic lost control,
And again the rock trolls had to roll.
But they couldn't help and do their part,
An act of true love will thaw a frozen heart!
The spring breeze is blowing
It's nice outside
Flowers bloom
The sun shines brighter
Bird's chirp
Maple syrup's a ready
The birds sing a lovely spring song
While others sing along
The grass is greener
The sky is bluer
Oh, the spring breeze is blowing, the spring breeze is blowing
My family crust
Broken crust
Tear in half crust
Take your half
I will take mine
Leave the pizza
Far behind
I don't need you
You're not my mom
Family crust
Broken apart
Like a family
With no love left to give
The daughters are sad
The brother is too
The step mom needs help
The father does too
They need each other
But they do not care
Cause it's just a crust
But not to share
They scream and they yell
The children a fight
Picking sides
Picking lies
The chicken nuggets don't lie
As the car drives away
Their hearts left at home
If only they hadn't asked
Where is she
Not home
Tacos on plates
Anger in the air
Goes to pick sister
Unknowing of where
How has this happened?
Not here and not there
Insults are thrown
Punches are kept
Our crust is broken
No leftovers
No home
Spring is here! Spring is here!
Flowers blooming
Birds chirping
The smell of flowers flies across me
Squirrels run up and down trees
Sky is blue, grass is green
Pancakes are ready, time to eat
Spring is here! Spring is here!
I feel the spirit of spring cheer!
